McCain's Lawyer: "We Lost the McCain I Knew"

John Dowd, John McCain's former defense lawyer in the Keating Five investigation, is leading the attempt by McCain's campaign to rewrite history of McCain's role in the Keating Five Savings and Loan Scandal.

Dowd held a press conference this week to respond to Barack Obama's Keating Economics video which briefly covers McCain's role in the Keating Five Scandal. During the press conference Dowd said that McCain had been railroaded during the Senate investigation, which ultimately ruled McCain had acted inappropriately while taking cash and gifts from Charles Keating in return for political favors. Dowd implied that McCain was no longer sorry for helping Keating steal $3.4 billion.

However, Dowd was extremely critical of McCain as recently as June, 2007. Dowd endorsed Fred Thompson over McCain during the Republican primaries.

Dowd explained to the Washington Post why he wouldn't endorse McCain. "I am very sorry to see what's happened to John," Dowd said. "I don't think his campaign is being well run...It's a difficult thing to leave a friend...But we lost the John McCain I knew."

If Dowd thought the McCain he knew was gone in 2007, what does he honestly think now? It appears Dowd buried his beliefs just to get some business.

McCain has bounced around in the last few weeks from being a bumbling laughingstock to a racist hate spewing mouthpiece for a campaign that has stooped low enough to encourage the assassination of their rival.
