Monday, Bloody Monday

Monday's announcement of layoffs just kept coming. By the end of the day, at least 75,000 people were either suddenly out of work or learned their jobs would soon disappear.

A roundup of coverage:

"Home Depot, Caterpillar, Sprint Nextel and at least eight other companies announced on Monday they would cut more than 75,000 jobs in the United States and around the world." (New York Times)

"Since Nov. 1, America's 500 largest companies have said they would hand out 330,815 pink slips." (Forbes)

"More pink slips, pay freezes and other hits are expected to come in the months ahead as companies desperately look for ways to survive.

"We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg — the big firms," said Rebecca Braeu, an economist at John Hancock Financial Services. "There's certainly other firms beneath them that will lay off workers as quickly or even quicker." (Associated Press)

“The economy is deteriorating at a faster clip than even the most dreary forecasts had expected,” said Joseph Brusuelas, an economist..." (New York Times)

"On Wednesday, the tally of mass layoffs for December will be released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Already, the bureau says the United States economy has shed 2.55 million jobs since the recession began, pushing the unemployment rate up to 7.2 percent last month." (New York Times)

Canon Encourages Employees To Have Sex

Japanese consumer electronics giant Canon is encouraging their employees to have sex more often, which they hope will result in more children and improve Japan's declining birthrate.

"In a country where 12-hour workdays are common, the electronics giant has taken to letting its employees leave early twice a week for a rather unusual reason: to encourage them to have more babies."

"Canon has a very strong birth planning program," says the company's spokesman Hiroshi Yoshinaga. "Sending workers home early to be with their families is a part of it."

"At 1.34, the birthrate is well below the 2.0 needed to maintain Japan's population, according to the country's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare."

A quote from a Canon employee showed there's still a huge difference between American and Japanese workers:

"It's great that we can go home early and not feel ashamed," said employee Miwa Iwasaki."

Republicans Forget They Caused This Recession

GOP leaders are attacking Barack Obama publicly and claiming the presidents stimulus package won't nudge the economy in the right direction.

These are the same Republicans who helped George W. Bush rape and pillage the country for eight years, but now they are insisting they have a part in fixing the mess they created.

The biggest ringleader is Rush Limbaugh, a convicted drug addict who has watched the ratings of his syndicated radio show plummet in recent years.
