American Jobs Are Sinking Like A Rock

Nancy Pelosi's office has released a graph showing job losses during this recession. Click on the graph for a larger view.

The green line represents our current recession that began in December 2007, the blue line is the 1990 recession, red is 2001 recession.

The 1990 recession bottomed out after 12 months before starting to turn around. The 2001 recession bottomed out after 31 months before turning around. By comparison, the current recession fell off a cliff, losing jobs much more rapidly with no signs of upturn yet. More jobs have been lost in the current recession than in 2001 or 1990, and at the current rate of losing 500,000-600,000 jobs per month, by May the current recession will have put more people out of work than the 2001 and 1990 recessions combined.

Millions of Americans are hoping President Obama's stimulus package gets passed on Tuesday and quickly begins to make an impact. However, economists are pointing out that many of the benefits of the stimulus package meant to spark job creation have been eliminated or severely cut and replaced with more tax cuts in order to gain support from key Republicans.
