Could Twitter and Facebook have prevented The Holocaust?
The amazing power of social networks has changed the way the world gets news. Twitter and Facebook have proven that they aren't just for updating a user's status or chatting with friends. Protesters in the Middle East have successfully used social media to organize and to cover their own protests. Perhaps most importantly, Twitter and Facebook, along with the widespread use of Internet-connected cell phones allows citizens to report the every move of governments, including attacks and murders that dictators do not want known.
That got me wondering. Could Twitter and Facebook have prevented The Holocaust?
If the Internet, cell phones, and social media existed before World War II, could Hitler and his Nazi henchmen have gotten away with genocide against Jews, Gyspies, homosexuals, and other so-called "enemies of the state"?
Not only would the persecuted, as well and their friends and families have let the world known what was going on, but there were Germans who did not support Hitler who would have also likely used Twitter and Facebook if they had existed at the time.
Some might argue that much of the world's leaders were aware of the concentration camps and what Hitler was doing, which can be debated, but what cannot be debated is that public support for intervening would have quickly grown had the average citizen known what was going on.
Social media would have gotten the word out.
Having watched first hand the role Twitter and Facebook (and other sites) have played in the Middle East revolts, I think our future history has forever been changed.
There's nothing new about dictator's murdering their own citizens, especially when they revolt, but this is the first time that any person, of any nationality, can have a voice that is actually heard around the world.
